artist statement
My work intends to create an experience of sensory activation, rather than to serve as a backdrop for food or drink. Unexpected patterns and subtleties in a piece cannot be uncovered until someone holds it in their hands and becomes immersed in it.
Delicate and fragile surfaces command attentiveness in a user’s exploration of the work, while bright colors and varied textures promote play and invite touch. This creates a tension between the urge to touch and the fear of breaking. My aim in combining these elements is to replicate the same sensation that exists when one is exploring out in nature. This leads the user to be fully present and mindful as they investigate the piece.
My work is not just about the vessel; it’s also about creating an emotional and tactile experience. As you interact with the pieces, they should spark a sense of exploration and whimsy.
